How To Get An Indiana Court Ordered Title: 8 Easy Steps

indiana court order title

Do you have a vehicle in Indiana, but no title? Or did you lose the title to your vehicle before transferring it over to your name? Maybe you tried applying for a duplicate certificate of title but didn’t have sufficient evidence.

If you do not qualify to get a title through one of the following options, you might be able to get a court oredered title.

How to get an Indiana Court Ordered Title

Step #1: Check to make sure you are eligible

All court ordered title applications are processed by the BMV Central Office Title Processing.

Contact 888-692-6841 and ask to see if you are able to get a court ordered title. The BMV will want you to exhaust all other efforts to get a title before starting the court ordered title option.

Step #2: Complete title application

Download the Indiana Court Ordered Title Application and complete either:

  • Application for Certificate of Title for a Vehicle
  • Application for Certificate of Title for a Watercraft

Step #3: Get court order

Get a court order from your local county clerk of courts office. You might have to file a petition with the Court of Common Pleas before seeing a judge.

Court order must establish ownership, provide a description of the vehicle (year, make, VIN), direct the BMV to issue you a title, and contain the signature of the judge and court seal or stamp.

Once you have your court order, move on to the next step. You will need to complete the next steps within 30 days from getting your court order or else there will be an additional fee charged at the end. (More about the fee in Step #6).

Step #4: Get vehicle inspected

Get your vehicle inspected  by a state law enforcement officer and have them complete a Physical Inspection of Vehicle State Form.

Step #5: Complete other paperwork

Complete the following :

Step #6: Pay fee(s)

Pay $15.00 fee via Mastercard, Visa, check, electronic check, or money order.

  • An additional $30 fee will be added to application packets received thirty-one (31) days after the stamp date on the court order.
  • If you would like your title processed at a faster speed, you can choose to pay an additional $15 fee.
  • If the vehicle or watercraft is transferring ownership, include a 7% sales tax of the dollar amount listed in the court order or on the bill of sale/purchase agreement. If no information is provided about the value of the vehicle, sales tax payment will be calculated based on the NADA value of the vehicle. If exempt from sales tax, include a Certificate of Gross Retail Use Tax or Exemption Form with your packet.  (This form is in the packet that you downloaded in Step #2)

Step #7: Submit

Mail all the above paperwork, your court order, and fee(s) to the Central Office Title Processing, 100 North Senate Avenue Room N411, Indianapolis, IN 46204

Step #8: Wait for approval

If the BMV approves your paperwork, you will be issued an IN court ordered title. If documents or information is incomplete, the entire IN court ordered title application will be mailed back to you.
